Younger generations value social media over salary!? It’s not as crazy as you think!

15 Nov

By now many of us have seen the report done by Cisco that says over half of young people value Facebook and smart phones over salary. There has been a lot of conversation around this study and at The Pulse Network the Inside Marketing team decided to look into the study further.

I personally think that the blog posts about this study are misleading. The study shows that younger generations value technology. The study was not just about using social media and smart phones at work, but also the ability to work from home. The idea of Workshifting is nothing new. In fact many companies are going this way. Younger generations do value freedom, technology, and quality of life over salary, and you can ask most HR professionals who can tell you that most people, regardless of age, value many benefits over salary. If you just Google ‘work-life balance’ or ‘what do employees value’ or any search term on this topic and you will see a whole bunch of articles and blog posts about this subject going back almost 10 years. I think we are just seeing a shift in what benefits are valued. It used to be health insurance and FSAs, now that those benefits are required. To Gen Y (and much of Gen X too) benefits are now about technology and freedom. I think to understand these results fully it is critical to understand generational differences. At the O.C. Tanner Executive Summit in September, Tom Carrol from R.R. Donnelly and Sons gave an EXCELLENT talk on this very topic (and if you have time to watch the video I highly recommend you do so!)

Merging Social, Content and SEO Strategies – Why It Matters

12 Aug
A post from our corporate blog at The Pulse Network, read more and watch more videos here!
“This is Part One of a Four Part Series Featuring Nick Saber, President of the Pulse Network, and Myself, Rebecca Slosberg, Account Executive at The Pulse Network Discussing the Topic of Search Engine Optimization.

Most companies aren’t thinking about SEO the right way.

Search Engine Optimization strategies can’t live on an island.  In the past, SEO could be considered an isolated strategy, but as search engines have become more intelligent, we need to update the way we think about driving inbound leads.

It’s more important than ever to bring your social media strategy, your content strategy and your SEO strategy together.  In Februrary of this year, Google changed the game with their release of  “Google Panda”.  SEO used to be about keywords and link-building, but search engines are now thinking like people.  As a result, the impact of popularity of content and volume of discussions on social media have a much larger impact on your website’s SEO.”

My New Hero

9 Aug

I recently (over the last two weeks) discovered The Bloggess, Jenny Lawson. She is hysterical, sometimes i wonder if she is a long lost sister (we share all the same anxiety issues, a love of cats, and doing ridiculous stunts because your husband said no) and I just adore her. I had to share this video of a speech she gave at Ignite Evo. Is it fluffy nonsense? Yes. But it made me ‘Furiously Happy’, so now i want to share it with all of you. Enjoy and read her blog!!! It will make you happy!

State of the Internet 2011

21 Jul

State of the Internet 2011

This is not any old infographic, sure its info that many of us have seen before, but this one is INTERACTIVE! Pretty sweet, see what OnlineSchools.com had to say about their colossal ‘State of the Internet 2011′ interactive infographic.

“The Internet has changed the way we live—that’s obvious. But what we think people forget is how big and important the worldwide web really is. Do you know how much time people spend on the Internet every day? Do you keep track of how many times you tweeted last month? Do you know how many people bought Uggs from Amazon (shame on them!)? No? You don’t?

That’s okay—we’ve done that for you. But beware: what you have before you isn’t just any old infographic. The content might shock you. If you thought that the Internet was just “really big,” you are sadly mistaken. The Internet is colossal. The Internet is a giant elephant that is trampling all across the globe leaving its enormous footprints.

Interact with this infographic. Play with the information and think about what it means for you; to you. Become a part of the story that it has to tell. Why wouldn’t you?”
